SOME PICTURES

So, in no particular order and because I thought you might be curious, here are a few pictures.
First of all, chez Copperfield.

I got up one day to find this photo in my letterbox. It was taken by an estate agent, then pasted onto a piece of card, with the legend along the lines of, "We could sell your house and it would look like this." (minus the wheelie bins and box of wood, I hope). I don't live on a slope by the way, it was just the way the photo went into the scanner. Notice also the intense blue sky, which is a regular feature of life on the prairies.

Next, as a sort of homage to Gadget's post about all the police vehicles at Kingsnorth, here's a picture of a Ford F250.

Look carefully and you'll notice the ironic decal at the back that says "FOOT PATROL". It's mainly used by the 'beats' part of the organization. I work in patrol rather than beats and the distinction is rather like the NPT(neighbourhood)/IMU(response) in the UK. Over here, the city is so spread out, foot patrol isn't really an option outside of the centre so the neighbourhood officers go around on mountain bikes. I don't know whether they carry on in the winter, as things get more than a little chilly round these parts.

Finally, here's some roadkill.

I'm told that this is a badger, but realistically, you aren't going to get too many shaving brushes out of him. Readers are, as ever, welcome to comment, but I think it's an American badger and the fact that it appears here, dead, on the front bumper of a jeep means that it's probably not subject to the provisions of the Badger Act. The roadkill in western Canada is enormous and driving between Calgar and Edmonton it often looks like there have been a few massacres on the road, where the odd Elk has lost the battle with a truck.

# "Wasting Police Time" by David Copperfield is available from Amazon and all good bookshops.: 3:25 AM
Comments:
Yep, that's an American badger all right.

Though they may be barmy for wildlife in Canada, they obviously don't prize it above the livelihood of their farmers...

I want a Crown Vic!

You may be thinking of the Calgary Police Service that has temporarily suspended recruitment of British police officers, BUT Copperfield's employer, Edmonton Police Service is still recruiting experienced British Police Officers and they're offering you a combined $4000 as a signing bonus & moving allowance, to boot!

Several helpful links HERE.

British Expat Forum is also a good source of info.

Notice how the Ford has the word 'Neighbourhood' spelt the English way.

Canadians have hybrided British and American spellings. We seem to have adopted the 'u' in words like 'colour' and 'neighbourhood'. However, z's (pronounced 'zed' rather than American 'zee') rule over s's in words like civilization.

The size of roadkill varies too. I see a lot of jackrabbits, gophers and magpies. Rarely, I see deer. And if you hit a moose or elk, the animal will need to be put down but the animal will look more whole than your car.

Definately a badger, racoons or coons as they are known locally have a stripey tail and can be made into a nice Davey Crockett hat. They have a habit of overwintering in combine engine compartments, usually between the fan and radiator, so when the engine is started the coon is not much good for anything let alone a hat.

Me and my missus are going to Lethbridge Alberta in November but I didn't get offered four grand!
It's probably because I'm not a cop.

Reading this blog from the very beginning may have sub-consciously helped my decision to go.

My wife has already set her stall out in her own new blog ...

If you hit an elk or moose, you could well be dead. They're big enough that your car hits their legs, and their body comes through your windshield…

As a 48 yr old Special am I too old :(

I love Canada. Went there a couple of times on ships visits when I was in the navy.
