Sir Norman Bettison is NOT a greedy, vain moron.
He would like to make this known.Sir Norman, left, the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire, is fuming after cyber-vandals messed about with his page on Wikipedia.
For those of you who have never heard of Wikipedia, it's an online encyclopaedia where entries are open for editing by pretty much anyone.
What happens is, you put up an entry about someone or something and others then add to it as they see fit. The idea is that mature adults work together to create democratic definitions for everything. Of course, it often descends into juvenile name-calling and tit-for-tat squabbling of the sort which was once seen only in playgrounds. Still, it can be funny.
Apparently, sinister forces took issue with the content of Sir Norman's Wikipedia page and started changing it to fit their less-than hagiographic view of the chief and his glorious achievements.
Among the suggestions added to his page was that - far from being the leading policeman of this gilded generation - he was actually a greedy, vain moron. The chief has apparently had HQ minions logging on to Wikipedia with some regularity to delete mean comments such as this. According to Police Review and the papers, his page has changed over 100 times in recent months.
I'm sure it's wholly unfair to characterise the chief as 'greedy' (though he did try to have his cake and eat it recently), 'vain' or 'moronic'. On this latter point, after all, (and as his Wikipedia page used to tell us - it's now locked for a fortnight), he read philosophy and psychology at Oxford (what, no sociology?).
But still, the council tax payers of West Yorkshire may be wondering whether there might not be more serious issues - like missing kids, armed robberies and murders, for instance - for their senior police officers to concern themselves with.
The hard-pressed cops he leads may be thinking the same thing.

In the course of my employment as a Neighbourhood/Area Officer I have had abuse shouted at me, been assualted received crimestoppers intelligence that I am to receive a leathering of the scallies who I have "dissed".
I have had my name and derogatory comments sprayed on the walls of the council estate!
I am probably no different to many other street cops up and down the country.
Fortunately we can get on with the job and treat this as "par for the course". I wish I was on Wikipedia as I could quite easily not be bothered with anything put on there too!
I have obviously upset people - and I am not bothered as they are quite recognisably the people I should be upsetting..
Mr Bettison - treat any abuse as a sign you are doing your job! and do your job rather than worrying about what people think or write!

The only police that would be upset with reporting, are those police who are up to something.

This obsession with how things 'look', combined with Head-in-the-sand leadership, isn't limited to the Police, it's the same in schools too; and just as you never see Head Teachers in classrooms attempting to teach 'challenging' students, I'm guessing you rarely see the Police Top Brass on the High Street on a Friday night at chucky out time.
That's 'cos they're too busy ticking boxes and putting out bulletins that tell us how good everthing is.

I would hazard a guess that a lot of the 'malicious entries' are from his own staff. He has treated them with utter contempt over his intention to change the rota. He comes across as a dictatorial bully and the sooner he goes the better I have heard said.
And he looks remarkably like Tom Sellick (Magnum PI) so some other insult might be levelled against him

One really has to question his psychological ability to hold down a Chiefs job if he cannot put up with a bit of criticism on Wikipedia!
If we street cops took half the umbrage about what was daubed or said about us the Police would grind to a halt.

Being the 'medal anorak' that I am I could not help but notice that although in the picture he is sporting a ribbon for his Police Long Service & Good Conduct Medal there is no Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. He is also sporting an Iraq War Medal ribbon - which again seems a little odd and is not helped by the fact he has it on upside down! - obviousy detail and uniformity are another two of his weaker points.

Surely someone accessing the internet on a Police computer to check a personal profile win Wikipedia amounts to "using the internet for personal use" which is a disciplinary offence.

On leaving Merseyside Police did he get a payoff & a pension? I missed his return to West Yorkshire Police, what reason did they give for hiring him
He had a Chief's pension from Merseyside when he retired in 2004 to take up a lucrative job hanging around Centrex. He had to leave Centrex when he failed to get the job of Chief Exec of NPIA, and went to work for ACPO and got a knighthood as his 'I'll go quietly' payoff that senior people seem to get. He worked for ACPO on the same Centrex salary (£185k according to their Annual Report) plus a civil service Chief Exec's pension for his Centrex work and the Merseyside Chief's pension.
He then was hired by West Yorks (a horrible decision for the force, but that's another story) and wanted to keep his new W Yorks salary of £160k, his civil service pension from his time at Centrex, and his Chief's pension.
He used the taxpayers money to threaten to sue the Home Office and Merseyside over the pension issue, but dropped it when the Times covered it before Christmas.

They should perhaps have added "insensitive and self-obsessed" - but no doubt if they did Norman has edited off his page from the comfort of the Chief Constable's office.

Surely if an ordinary Bobby was accused of wasting his time on the force internet changing something online to make himself look better he'd get in serious trouble?
As for getting colleagues to waste their time on it - and having looked at his wikipedia page you are talking hours and hours everyday - unforgivable.

Why is anyone surprised that Norman is using police time to edit his wikipedia page? In 1998 in the House of Commons Maria Eagle MP accused him of being part of a "black propaganda campaign which aimed to deflect the blame for what had happened on to any one other than themselves." It is a pretty serious situation if you get named in Parliament as a cop, and accused of skulduggery.

A great disappointment in a lifelong quest to improve the vanguards of public services, namely policing and justice in Yorkshire, was their corruption by freemasonry. Neither could ever serve the interests of the public whilst serving the interests of a secret society. We must all work together to remove this immoral parasite.
As a non police officer but resident of West Yorkshire I wonder how the Chief Constable can instruct anybody to waste time on checking his own personal entry on Wikipedia.

I added this to his wikipedia page, but one of his minions has deleted it already. His common touch and outgoing personality ensured he was popular with colleagues and subordinates alike, indeed his rendition of 'I want to break free' by the British rock group Queen at the 2001 Merseyside Police all-ranks Charity Talent Contest is still spoken about to this day.

Hilarious this might be; vain he might be, but I wouldn't use the word moron, that's a bit much, but the cha walas from his Force are monitoring us all. Shame on us all for we are the underclass to him and his fellows.
This is a great example of ego defeating common sense. I bet he regrets his petty actions now. All the controversy and shameful behaviour he wanted to conceal is all over the internet now. If you google his name the "greedy vain moron" story comes up near the top. Sad, sad, man.

I used to work with Bettison when he ran Centrex. He's a horrible man, a nasty bully, who thinks of nobody else. His greed and love of the high life were legendary - if you want to see how he inflated his salary check out the Centrex annual reports. Total greed.

He needs his head examined (and not just because of the horrible moustache or because he can't wear his cap properly).
What sort of copper uses taxpayer's money to try and sue another force and the Home Office (causing them both to waste yet more taxpayer's money) to pay him a full pension and a full salary at the same time? Not even that crooked bunch we call "MPs" can do that!
And his insensitivity at trying this con when the rest of us in the service are still smarting about not even getting the pay increase we deserve is amazing.
I'll bet the costs of his legal action would have allowed every West Yorks officer their pay increase.
