Evil Pigs
working tirelessly, have found Shannon Matthews and brought her to safety.
It's sadly very rare that these stories end happily, and I must admit I feared the worse. We probably all did.
There's been a lot of rubbish talked lately about how Shannon's case hadn't received the media coverage others have, and lots of insinuation that people don't really care about kids from less than idyllic homes.
I can tell you from personal experience that this is balls, certainly as far as police operations go. The incident room oop north will have been full of lots of ordinary human beings, lots of them mums and dads themselves, going through a range of emotions, from weak hope to black despair.
People will have been working till their eyes closed, and they'll have gone to bed at night with Shannon's face in their heads and woken up with it still there the next day. They'll have been snappy with their wives and husbands, and even their kids, and then felt horrible immediately afterwards.
They'll all have been dreading the call about the discovery on waste ground. I've sat with parents who've just lost a young child. It isn't nice.
Tonight, those on the fringes of the investigation will be sinking a few pints. Those at the heart of it have a long way to go.
Here's to the lads and lasses of West Yorks - even Sir Norman.

Poor little mite.
I mean, being sent back her "mother-of-7". I thought I was watching Waynetta Slob when I saw her.
Big ups to the boots on the beat. I'd like to hear how all the management consultants setting their targets contributed to the result.

blimey rogerborg, give it a rest. i'm as cynical as the next but this little kid is back with her mum and i doubt she cares about much else.
can you just take a day off and be happy?
well done w yorks, have a pint of tetleys on me.

As a cynical cop, its not often that I let myself get hopeful about these things, but I'm not ashamed to say that I laughed aloud and clapped when I heard this poor little girl had been found alive.
After a long and difficult shift, where a lot did not go my way, this good news genuinely cheered me up no end. Its for this kind of result that I became a cop (though I'm in northern ireland so had nothing to do with this particular case) I still felt happy.
Sometimes we really loose our way, because our vision is obscured by crazy government initiatives, targets, social engineering, public disorder, paperwork, crazy people and all the other crap of the job, but this kind of thing brings it all back into perspective.
Its all about helping those most vulnerable in society who need protecting. (And I don't mean vulnerable as defined by social services and the home office- which would cover most criminals).
Congratulations to all those officers involved!!
Such a shame this kind of thing does not reflect in government targets and flow charts etc.

Why is it that the police seem to assume that everyone is against them? The title says it all: "Evil Pigs".
The fact is that most people have a lot of respect for the difficult job that the police do.
However, there are problems: most Sun readers can't see beyond their noses and believe the propaganda they read. Also the government tasks police with enforcing stupid laws that criminalise victimless behaviour. Finally, as Mr Copperfield has so well illuminated, the police waste most of their time on work that should be done by the civilian help that they used to have.
I've been reading this, and other, police blogs for some time now and the only thing that makes me sad is how ingrained the police prejudice against the underclass is. There is actually a middle way between the policeman's intolerance and the social worker's acceptance.
Mike.

Heard the news Shannon was found while halfway thru late shift.
Then went 'job2job' with a spring in my step.
Well done all of you.
Thoughts to the parents of those who never came home.
We never really forget them.

Well Foxy you're not wrong about the strain of a case like this getting to people and making them snappy with their kids. We are all only human after all. Great news though, which made me cry and smile. Sadly, happy endings like this one are all too rare. The power of prayer and the will of God has more to do with it than most would care to admit.
That Shannon WOULD be found alive was foretold a long time ago, by Lynne Whitely, in spirit, who sadly did not survive her ordeal. Psychic ability is real, when it IS genuine, and has helped the force more times than THEY care to admit.
A "behind the scenes" tip off is what actually led to the opportunity for Shannon to be found. Obviously she was NOT in that house from the day she went missing. Had she been, the neighbour would have heard Shannon in there weeks ago.
My heart goes out to Shannon, because I know from my own personal experience how scared she has been. The MORONS that abduct kids truly are evil bastards, callous, cruel, selfish and devious.
CASTRATE THEM, NO IFS and NO BUTS!
Well done to the dedicated SHEEPDOGS who look after the "flock". Hat's off indeed.

It was good old fashioned police work.. the detectives who went to the house didnt get an answer, so did some house to house. The "tip off" wouldnt have come along if it hadnt had been for the instincts of those police officers.
GOOD POLICE WORK. WELL DONE.

Indeed, and Rogerborg is quite right to question the targets driven culture, even though he came in for a bit of stick for it.
"My heart goes out to Shannon, because I know from my own personal experience how scared she has been."
Well, don't know what your 'personal experience' was, but I wouldn't be so quick to assume anything about this case. I think there's a lot more to come out, myself.

Our office raised a cheer when she was found, great news. Agree with Rogerborg about stats and targets VS real police (hard) work.
It`s the day after now so forgive me a bit of conspiracy theory. I agree there may be more than meets the eye here.
But, whether it`s a genuine abduction or some mad scheme to get money via 'doing a Maddie' isn`t going to help Shannon.
She will have been caught in up in a situation she barely understands, possibly with the knowledge and involvement of people she trusts.
I don`t want to choose between a contrived family 'abduction' and a genuine stranger abduction. Both seem as bad as each other.
I hope she can bounce back and have a few more years just being a kid.

Congratulations to W Yorks Police on a fine result. There is obviously more than meets the eye here and we wish you continued succes with your investigations.
Well done to the West Yorkshire police though though why Sir norman gets a special mention I dont know!
Also the title 'Evil Pigs' get over yourself. Its the minority who think that about police, maybe the majority with the scum you deal with on a regular basis.

Foxtrot Oscar's not around to answer this himself, but the 'Evil Pigs' headline was probably aimed at people like the poster who expressed his delight (in the previous comments list) at the fact that three police officers had recently died.
I very much doubt he meant people with legitimate concerns about the way the police operate - he himself has such concerns, after all!

BTW - Shannon is not 'back with her mother' in the way we would understand, she is under a police protection order.
That's NOT the same as police protection like a witness, it's a child protection order. Go Figure.

I was really surprised and pleased the Shannon Matthews was found, we found out near the end of our last early shift and the whole relief were surprised to say the least.
However there is clearly more to this than meets the eye as the police have taken Shannon into Emergency Police Protection, which they can only do when the child is at risk of significant harm.
I suspect this story has some distance to go yet!

Excellent work by West Yorshire Police, A lot of people, myself included, assumed that by this point there wasn't much hope, so this result is fantastic.
To be fair to the media, most of the reporting of the actual investigation has been very positive (except for the stupid "should police have knocked the door sooner?" comment on the BBC website). My criticism would be that they seem to have lost interest in the case fairly early on due to the fact that Shannon's family aren't particularly photogenic or sympathetic.

"how Shannon's case hadn't received the media coverage others have"
Well it didn't, but so what? Madeleine McCann is still missing despite the endless media coverage. It's meant to sell newspapers, not find missing children.

Please Peeps, Change/Modify that Evil Pigs heddy. I understand passion, but heck, it's just not appropriate, Don't you think?
Just a quick point: It is not "rare" to find missing kids. I've been to dozens in my career and found every single one of them. Admittedly it is harder when it is a 'stranger abduction'. Missing kids is still one of the priority calls in my book not least because of the help and support you get from the public even when you are waking them up at 4 in the morning.
This should not detract from the excellent work done in this case. Top result people! Well Done!

Not all the critics call us Evil Pigs. Some are more devious. I see the Daily Mail headline today asks why the police did not find Shannon sooner. Is this a record? It usually takes three days to go from being brave, resourceful officers to being plods who do not know how to do their job.
As journalists seem to bend rules to find out lots about people they want to get at why did they not use their skills to find the little girl?

I did 4 days on the operations to find Shannon, including the first 2 days of major searching. It was hard going, it had been -6C the night of her disappearance and a lot of us were quite worried early on. Since those days divisional teams have been supplementing the operation with staff on a rotational basis and so a lot of us had some minor involvement, from walking through the fields step by step looking for any kind of clue, to house to house searching and questioning of occupants.
I was at work when the news came into our office and there was a feeling of huge relief and shock it has to be said. But we're glad she is safe and well and hope that she didn't go through anything too harrowing during those 24 days.
Couldn't believe my ears this morning as I turned the news on to criticism of the force over the search. Well done to the team behind it all, and thanks to those other forces who chipped in.

The "sociological soup" that is modern Britain defies analysis sometimes.
The comment I most agree with on here is the one that says..... There will be lots more revelations.
As a Probation Person, working in Groupwork with violent and atavistic offenders, I'm often shocked by the dearth of experience in young people. They don't have nuturing, parenting, moral reasoning or even basic standards of behaviour.
Like you guys in the police, we're just keeping the lid on the worst apsects of Capitalism so that men in polo shirts, talking into mobile phones can still play Golf in California. They are the true enemy.

According to Government that will still be only "one detection" so on paper counts the same as a 50p shoplifter. That is why the target culture we have in our society is so wrong..........
If you think I am offering a cup of tea to Norman you have another thing coming. Good on W. Yorks as a Force though. Still even after Shannon was found I guess some bods there are trying to ensure Norman's wiki entry is intact.
let's just all be greatful that a little girl has survived 24 days away from home. despite her family, her class, the media coverage and the area she is from. as someone who has worked as a FLO on a number of major incidents such as this i have seen the anguish that families go through first hand. obviously i dont know anything about this particular one but i bet the not knowing was the hardest thing to deal with.
You guys really all need to read the thread over on Inspector Gadget's, as it's much more sensible than this one. As for the "evil pigs" headline, has no one heard of irony in this place?
The news reporters kept saying that Shannon is the FIRST EVER child to be found alive after this long following an abduction. That suggests this was not a normal abduction and was, as Gadget's blog suggests, a scam of some kind. That's not being classist, it's based on the fact that this was an abduction like no other, with an outcome like no other.

I must be naive I've not paid a great deal of attention to this case over the last few weeks but from what I had seen and read the police were doing everything they could to find her. I was amazed the morning when I hear the police are being criticized for not finding her more quickly. Are journalists insane, why oh why oh why can they not look at the positives, she has been found, she is alive, she is safe but no the police should have found her sooner because some random person may or may not have suggested they look at the uncle's house. From what I can gather it could have taken them weeks just to search the houses of the fathers within that family unit. Plus no doubt the police had many crackpot calls saying she'd been seen in Bolivia or was currently working in a sweat shop... I mean really!
Congrats to the bobby's on the beat for working tirelessly.

Little girl found ALIVE by good police work.
As for the rest of the issues brought up here... its useless speculating about the whys and whereabouts of her dissappearance and what she may or may not have suffered in those days missing as we simply DO NOT KNOW at this stage.

There is a body of people out there who actively hate the Police. Policemen find missing child? - Evil Pigs should have done it sooner cos my best mates cousins Hamster saw it on the Interweb. Policeman saves child from drowning? - Evil pig should have stopped child getting wet in the first place. Ad nauseum. Damned if you do, damned if you don't, so what's new?
Nonetheless, a big 'job well done' to the West Yorks force from this MOP. There are people out in the real world who still believe in the Police.

Wonderful news unfortunately soured by Sir Norman's tactless TV comments referring to public "coming out of the woodwork" and "fantasists". It is unlikely that he will interview Shannon personally, for which the public must express further gratitude.
I hope that some of the officers dealing with this case are reading. So that I can say well done to you, and despite the groundless criticism in the press, and what must be a lot of pressure from the desk jockeys, an ordinary member of the public thinks you're doing well.
In regards to comments above about bad apples: yes there are some but there always will be some that think their uniform is an excuse to bully. I have even been the victim. However I don't want to live in a perfect world where nobody is permitted to make mistakes because I know I make mistakes and that perfect world would have no place for me in it. Only the truly insane or stupid think that they and others around them should make no mistakes. Failure to accept ones own mistakes and those of others, and thereby take responsibility for them is the true disease in this country making everyones life impossible, particularly those who's job it is to clear up the mess.

They'll be getting a job next and giving up macdonalds as a staple diet for there kids!

I was personally amazed at how quickly the media started getting on the backs of the police and asking why it had taken three weeks to find the kid.
I am not a police officer, but I am guessing that there are a heck of a lot of houses and other properties/places to search in the area where the child was eventually found.
And even the family connection would probably have been difficult to disentangle given that the mother of the child had apparently had several children with several different fathers.
So, while I am definitely not a fan of 'modern' policing (targets, heavy reliance on surveillance rather than good detective work/policing, etc.), this case seems to have been a triumph (of good old traditional policing).
Very well done those involved!

Yes, thank you anon @4.35pm it is genuinely nice when the public is on our side. It's also an extra bonus when members of the force are also "nice" and treat "specials" with due respect.

Very revealing documentary on channel four tonight about little Shannon i thought... lets see who makes the most money in that family now.
What struck me is that Karen is a busy mum who keeps the home running. Nasty things have been said of her, which were undeserved. Yes she's a poor working class mother doing her best to raise kids
Im in my 30's, have worked hard all my life from school, to university to career. Ive only just afforded to buy my own house and cannot contemplate having children just yet as i cant afford them.
This is why i begrudge women like Karren... SEVEN CHILDREN by DIFFERENT MEN living off MY TAXES.
Why should this even be allowed??

I find myself wondering why, after a week or more, she's still on a PPO, and why her footsteps were heard in the house in which she was "imprisoned", but not her crying. I wonder why local Police report she was unharmed. I wonder if she went there voluntarily to escape Waynetta and her boyfriend. It's great that she's been found, but there is more to this matter than meets the eye. Staying anonymous...

Well done guys.
I worked on the Payne enquiry at a lowly DC level so have experienced a big investigation of this kind. I feel sure of the dedication of all the police staff involved. The maths of looking into family trees and checking them out of these large estates is staggering. All cred to the chief in sticking up for his staff.
We shouldn't expect members of the public to understand what is really involved should we? Thank goodness for them though and it is nice to read the positive comments on this thread.

There is more to this case than meets the eye, and a lot more that the public are not being told, so far. Shannon was being bullied in school and was sat on a wall crying just before she went missing. This was not her mother's fault and yet some people have been quite nasty and insulting about her.
So what if Shannon's mother is a poor working class woman. I saw the channel 4 programme about the family. Karen looked like a busy mother keeping the home and family together. She's ALSO been through an ordeal and does not deserve unkind comments.
There was NO "scam" despite what some ignorant people may like to suggest. What cess pit minds some people have!
And Karen's partner WORKS and is not living off others "taxes".
Some people, it would appear, talk utter crap about people they do not even know.
Shannon may be happier out of that environment for the forseeable, but that's no reflection on her mother. No child likes to hear nasty things said about her mum and Shannon is no different from any other child. Those that slag Karen off are just kicking her when she's down. Shame on you.
