The Jack Brown Appeal
Jack Brown is a five-year-old boy from London whose mum and dad are both Detective Sergeants in the Met.
Jack is suffering from a rare childhood cancer, neuroblastoma. This is a rapidly-spreading cancer and Jack's particular condition (the cancer has returned after remission) is such that he is considered untreatable in the UK.
However, one hospital - the Memorial Sloane Cancer Center in New York - has developed a treatment for cancers like Jack's which has proved, so far, 100% effective.
According to The Jack Brown Appeal, there is currently no UK government funding for this treatment. (This isn't the time for politics, but if there are any NHS bureaucrats or politicians reading this, you could always do the decent thing? I mean, if Orange Boy Hain can 'forget' about £100k, he must have some loose change knocking around, surely.)
Jack and his family (including his young brother and sister) have moved to the US and they urgently need funds to help pay his bills.
The above site is very informative. If you have children (and even if you don't) there's a good chance you'll shed a few tears at pictures like this.
If you'd like to donate you can do so online, but in case the site has crashed (according to Gadget readers it has been doing) here are some straightforward ways you can help (all details taken from the site):
1) Cheques payable to 'Jack Brown Appeal' can be sent to

Among other proposals, they're looking for people to run the London Marathon for Jack. A hundred cops raising a grand each would be very nice, wouldn't it? A good way for a few of our readers to meet up, too.
NB Thanks to Inspector Gadget for drawing this to our attention.

Comments:
just read the attached site, they apparently need a further $750,000!
I am a bit blown away by this number.
I have heard of complex open heart surgery costing say $50k, but how on earth can it cost $750k? (and the don't say how much they've raised already)

ok, it seems the total cost is $1.5m and they have $750k already.
see bbc link.
Any ideas how it can cost $1.5m?

Does it matter? What price a childs life?If every copper in the county gave £2 each that would more or less sort it,all it needs is the momentum to get it going.Haway peeps, even a tight a**e like me has donated!
It's hard to know what to say about this particular blog, which I notice has struck all the other normally quite verbal bloggers, dumb. Poor little mite. It's just too sad and must be heartbreaking for Jack's family. I hope and will pray that he gets better soon and that his family get all the help they need.
It begs the question though, WHY is this happening? Why don't the NHS help him? Is it because too much of the billions that go into the NHS is spent on managers and paper pushers? It seems morally WRONG to me in the 21st century, that a child should be suffering like this. HOW MANY MORE ARE THERE? God bless you little Jack and get well soon. X

My 12 year old daughter has been having treatment at the same New York hospital as Jack so we know the Brown family quite well.
Fortunately I had health insurance coverage when all this kicked off when she was 8, the reason the cost is so high is that MSKCC develop and drive all cancer treatment protocols so all the research is done there. The big drug companies don't want to invest in the huge ammounts required to develop life saving drugs which in their view only help a relatively small number of kids.
The real pisser here is that our NHS a) do not have the treatment required and b)will not provide funding for treatments which could save kids like Jack.

i realy hope that jack gets his money and his op. my cousin sadly passed away from this awful cancer at the age of 3. you keep fighting jack
It's Jack's Mum here, just saying a from the bottom of my heart thank you for bringing this out in the first instance, and to all who took the time to donate, thank you.
The treatment that had proved 100% successful was a Phase I study, ie. it was all about testing doseages.. Jack received the max dose, along with 2 other kids... and Jack smashed their statistics.. he relapsed, so did the other 2 kids. The max dose was too much for the liver to contend with, they only received a single dose, and they all relapsed.
Jack still has options and they are still costing a huge amount... but if this treatment were available in the UK, it would cost even more.. What matters is this... he is bringing AWARENESS.,
so to all you officers who are a bit suspicious... (and that includes me too normally,- that's our job)don't donate to little jack, but how about you support the 50 officers coming to New York in May to run 300 miles....not to raise money for jack, but for a new website we're setting up to raise funds for research (Joining Against Cancer in Kids) www.j-a-c-k.org...
Some of these guys have never run before, but they see Jack, they see his friends that die - they CARE.
Even if you only donate $1... it will help so very very much to pay for the necessary research, to save the lives of thousands of kids both at home and in the US. But don't listen to me... email either mark@oldbill.net (the organising officer...) or look at what Sir Hugh Orde or Sir Ken Jones are doing in May....
